My article discussed the importance of leisure activities for adolescents with intellectual disabilities. The article discussed perceived freedom in leisure is a reflection of the leisure components in the preparation of adolescents with intellectual disabilities for adulthood. The article defined perceived freedom in leisure as cognitive motivational construct of control over leisure experiences, the satisfaction of leisure needs and the participation in leisure behavior and global life satisfaction. Individual with special needs do not have many opportunities to participate in leisure activities. At the the adolescent age it is crucial for individuals to socialize with peers their own age and engage in conversation that is appropriate for their age level. When individuals are participating in leisure activities it has many benefits. These activities provide self expression and influence individual independence and self-confidence of adolescents. Leisure activities provide a mean of socialization which is crucial for adolescents and peer communication.

More importantly, leisure activities for adolescents with mild intellectual disabilities and other adolescents who participate together can contribute positively to individual development and integration in their lives. Leisure education programs are created to help individuals gain life experiences through different activities. It is shown leisure activities has a positive impact on the perceived freedom in leisure of children with intellectual disabilities.

A study was conducted and monitored a development in the level of confidence, skills and self-esteem of adolescents with intellectual disabilities by participating in leisure activities. It was seen a positive correlation between participation in leisure activities and cognitive functioning supports the importance of participating in leisure activities in order to enhance perceived freedom of adolescents with intellectual disability. Leisure activities can help enhance decision making skills. It was shown individuals who believe in having more freedom in leisure experiences, tend to exhibit much more efficiency and control and internal motivation. Perceived freedom in leisure has an indirect impact on the life skills of adolescents with mild intellectual disabilities.

In the study, 2 schools participated in a leisure education program for 8 weeks for 2 hours 2 days a week. In the leisure education program it provided students activities such as sporting activities and other leisure activities. After the activities the participants filled out a survey about their feelings during the activities. Many of them responded that they felt happy playing with others during the day and looked forward to each brand new activity. These leisure activities gave the participants a chance to develop friendships with their peers. The activities also provided an opportunity for choice making. It gave the students an opportunity to take responsibility for their activities and self-expression. Students also were able to enhance their decision making skills. After the program concluded, the results showed there was a positive effect on leisure education programs. Participants became aware of the term leisure  and activities that provide leisure education. They also learned the skills of building friendships and social communication. Participants were eager and determined during the program.

It's important to have more leisure education programs for adolescents individuals with specials needs. I work for a special recreation department and many parents of adolescents want their child to be more active and social. It is vital that adolescents learn social skills at this state of development. More schools should incorporate leisure education programs so individuals can interact with their peers.

  1. Sounds like you found an article of interest! Do you think leisure activities should start before adolescence so students can build upon the skill in high school?
